Artist Biography & Statement
Through her passion for seashells, her love for colors & their meaning, her fascination for alternative medicines, Marie is constantly experimenting to mix, pair & arrange these elements into an abstracted vision of a landscape; her intention is to create a piece that will blend into your home, make you feel this is a “place” – a beach, a river, a garden – that you’ve visited before.
With a background in chemical engineering, she has demonstrated a deep knowledge of Color theory, new materials, liquid coatings, 3D printing, color design; learning about paint formulation is an on-going process. She is also regularly involved in the latest Fashion & Interior Color Trends through various well-known organization, in Manhattan & Europe.
What she enjoys the most is applying what she learns in the industry into her art, playing with pigments, special effects, experimenting with different mediums, arranging precious paper or gold leaf, sand or seashells in a way that they will complement each other and become one with the painting. Her choice for a color palette is directed by the color of her centerpiece: whether it is an abalone, a blue starfish or a purple cowrie. The opposite is true too: her latest mixed media abstracts will feed her creativity into the consumer goods market.
My greatest pleasure starts in the collecting process; collecting objects and especially seashells anywhere in the World, gathering their names, enjoying their different facets; after the cleaning and sorting process are done, my 2nd greatest pleasure is the selection of an “object” for a new piece. With this selection will come the determination for a composition, color palette, texture, gloss & very importantly, the technical process, the physical attachment of the “object” onto the canvas. I have established a few technics to ensure the seashell will be permanently secured to the painting.
Besides the technic & chemistry, I believe in the powerful healing effect art & colors can have on the viewer; I embrace holistic medicine or spiritual systems as another facet of scientific observations: through the choice of colors as in chromo therapy, the arrangement of objects as in Feng shui, or the type of seashell you will be drawn into. I know of Healing centers using seashells as a messenger of your emotions.
Brittany, on the western coast of France, is the place where she gathers most of her materials. She travels to her home country, back to her studio in Pennsylvania, to ensure the replenishment of her various collections. Sweden, Great Britain, Israel, Morocco, Brazil, the Caribbean are other provenance for her “findings”.
Her paintings are part of private collections in France, the United States & Canada.
